Imphal: A man from Assam has been arrested in Imphal, Manipur on suspicion of being a smuggler.

He was arrested with over 11 kilograms of cannabis (ganja), police said on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off that a smuggler from Assam was trying to transport the illegal drugs from Imphal to his home state via Nagaland on National Highway 102, a team of Imphal West district police conducted a raid in the northern part of the city around 5 pm.

The raid, which took place near the North Assam Oil Company, led to the arrest of 30-year-old Anup Karmakar, a resident of Ulubari in Guwahati, Assam.

The police seized 11.379 kg of ganja from his possession.

A case has been registered against Karmakar, and further investigation is underway, police said.
