As part of nationwide observation of Gram Swaraj Abhijan, Ujjwala Diwas was celebrated by organizing LPG Panchayat by eight LPG distributors in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong in Assam on Friday.

In Diphu under the supervision of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), M/s Inghi Gas Service under their LPG Panchayat has celebrated Ujjwala Divas at M/s Inghi Gas Service complex, Rongbin Aklam, on Friday.

Under the guidance of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, 15000 LPG Panchayats were organized throughout the country where apart from experience sharing, aimed at safe and sustained usage of LPG, all out efforts were also made to maximize customer enrolment.

Each Panchayat had targeted participation of 500 women with a goal of enrolling at least 100 new LPG beneficiaries.

Safety Instruction and insurance cards were also distributed at the Panchayat.

Member of Autonomous Council (MAC), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Richard Tokbi interacted with women LPG beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) highlighting the importance of clean cooking fuel with regard to health, economy, safety and environment benefits.

“LPG as cooking fuel is available since long, it was viewed as only for the rich till few years back. Now under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, LPG is reaching even the BPL families with implementation of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana,” Tokbi said.

The LPG Panchayat was organized by Indian Oil Corporation Limited with support from M/s Inghi Gas Service.

Ujjwala Diwas aimed at meeting the enhanced target of enrolling eight crore LPG beneficiaries and the Panchayats provided new LPG connections to eligible beneficiaries.

Plans are being firmed up to hold similar LPG Panchayats every month at different centres in the district.

In Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts combined, LPG penetration is about 33 per cent in predominantly rural population.

It is expected that through the LPG Panchayat platform and PMUY, it will be possible to improve LPG penetration beyond 80 per cent, officials from Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) said.
