The Lawyers’ Association, Guwahati took out a protest rally as part of the All Assam Lawyers’ Association’s call for statewide protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Central Government’s move to grant Indian citizenship to illegal migrants by implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

The protestors during the rally demanded the Government to provide constitutional safeguard to the indigenous people and scrapping of the Bill for their greater interest.

The Lawyers’ Association, Guwahati general secretary Amal Chandra Baishya stated in a press release as, “The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 would violate the Articles 6, 21, 29 and 326 of the Indian Constitution if the Bill is passed by the Parliament.”

The general secretary further said, “The Bill would jeopardise the identity of the indigenous people of the State if the Government implements it.”

The protestors also submitted a memorandum, which was addressed to the Prime Minister and Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), before the Kamrup metro district deputy commissioner.

All Assam Lawyers’ Association (AALA) advisor Rohini Kumar Das and general secretary in-charge Tailendra Kumar Das during a press conference on June 11 announced the statewide protest programme against the Bill on Tuesday.

Besides, the Lawyers’ Association, Guwahati also condemned the heinous mob lynching incident that occurred at Panjuri village under Dokmoka Police Station in Karbi Anglong on June 8 where two Guwahati youths – Nipotpal  Das and Abhijit Nath were lynched to death.
