Due to incessant rains for the last few days, Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, has recorded two incidents of landslide in which one man was injured and another has lost life.

Following the incident of landslide at Jorbat on the city outskirts in which an aged man was seriously injured on Monday, in another incident of landslide in Guwahati, a man lost his life on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, a man died at Garchuk area due to landslide.

The deceased has been identified as Narayan Sah, a resident of Bethani hill at Garchuk’s Katahbah area.

Sources said, “Due to incessant rains at around 9 am today, a huge rock fell from the hill on Narayan Sah’s home. As a result, Sah, who was inside his home during the incident, received serious injuries.”

“Seriously injured Sah was immediately taken to Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) but he was declared dead by the doctors,” added sources.

Sources also informed that rocks continue to fall from Bethani hill.

Locals blamed some unscrupulous traders for the incident of landslide at Katahbari saying that illegal earth-cutting was going on in the Bethani hill.

However, following the two incidents of landslide in the city, the district administration of Kamrup (M) has ordered to stop earth-cutting with immediate effect until rains stop.

The circle officers concerned have been asked by the district magistrate of Kamrup (M) to keep watch in this regard.

In Tuesday’s incident, Narayn Sah’s wife and his only son escaped.

Meanwhile, as per the daily report of India Meteotrological Department (IMD), Guwahati on Tuesday, the southwest monsoon was active over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalya during the last 24 hours.

The IMD report also said available data indicate that light to moderate rain occurred at most places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.

The IMD forecasts moderate rain/thundershower and heavy to very rains in the next five days in most of the northeastern states including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
