A man, who allegedly murdered his 10-year-old nephew, was shot at by Assam Police personnel at Margherita in Tinsukia district on Tuesday night.
Police said the arrested person, who has been identified as Bikram Das, was shot as he tried to escape from the police custody.
According to police, Das confessed to killing his own nephew, Rahul Das, over a family dispute after the body of the minor was exhumed from the backyard of his house.

The minor went missing a day before and police launched an investigation after a missing report was filed at Margherita police station.
Following the complaint filed by Rahul’s parents, police arrested Bikram Das on suspicion and during interrogation, he admitted to killing his nephew.

The accused is a resident of the Kalpara area in Ledo while the victim child (Rahul Das) lived with his parents – Mantu Das and Uma Das – in the Jagun area.
A police official said, “After his arrest, Bikram was taken to the spot of the crime as part of the investigation, but as he tried to escape from custody, the police fired at him in which his left leg received bullet injury.”
The accused was taken to the Margherita civil hospital and was later shifted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh.
“He is undergoing treatment at AMCH,” the Assam Police official informed.
