Karnataka is the first state in southern India to propose the introduction of an Assam like National Register of Citizens (NRC).

As per reports, Karnataka home minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the state government is collecting information on immigrants in the state and will start working for implementation of an NRC after a discussion with the central government.

Bommai revealed that the police have been asked to prepare a list of illegal immigrants residing in various parts of the state.

He also said that the decision of preparing an NRC in the state has been taken after a series of meetings.

The minister said that a number of illegal immigrants are infiltrating to Bangalore and other areas of the state over the years.

He claimed that some of the illegal immigrants are involved in criminal activities in the state.

According to the police, most of the illegal immigrants are employed as workers in coffee estates across the state.

After Assam released the final list of NRC in August 31, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand are some of the states which have also proposed the implementation of NRC.

It may be mentioned that over 19 lakh people have been excluded from the final NRC in Assam.
