Kamrup District Administration has appealed to all street vendors and shopkeepers not to sell plastic flags as the state gears up to celebrate Independence Day.

Plastic flags are not to be used by the public to abide by the ‘Flag Code of India, 2002,’ consistent with the dignity of the flag.

“It has been observed by the District Administration that vendors and shopkeepers have been selling plastic flags in and around the city during important events. According to Section 2 of prevention of insults to National Honour Act of 1971’, one should not disrespect the national flag. Using plastic flags is a disrespect to the national flag.”, said deputy commissioner Virendra Mittal.

Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has also started an initiative to make the city’s markets a plastic-free zone.
