Sarod maestro Ustad Amzad Ali Khan has been selected for the Kamala Saikia Memorial National Award, 2018 for his contributions in propagating peace, harmony and brotherhood in society through his music.

The award will be presented at a function to be held on August 9 in the Vivekananda Kendra auditorium, Uzanbazar here. Biplab Kumar Sarma, retired judge of the Gauhati High Court will deliver the 17th Kamala Saikia memorial lecture on the occasion, said the organisers.

The biennial award, instituted in memory of late journalist and freedom fighter Kamala Saikia by a trust named after him, contains a citation and a cheque of Rs 1 lakh.

Since its inception in 2012, three distinguished personalities who have made remarkable contributions in their respective fields, have received this award. They include Hemendra Prasad Barooah, Dr Tapan Saikia and Dr Uddhab Kumar Bharali.

The August 9 event is being organised in association with the Guwahati Press Club, added the organisers.
