Kalita Janagosthi Sanmilan on Wednesday demanded the Central government to fix 1951 as cut-off year to detect and deport foreigners from Assam and to safeguard the land, political and cultural rights of the indigenous people of the state.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Kalita Janagosthi Sanmilan president Dr Soneswar Kalita said, “A Bill which can safeguard the land, political and cultural rights of the indigenous people of Assam on the basis of 1951 as cut-off year should be tabled in the Parliament of India.”

Demanding disclosure of the original report of Hari Shankar Brahma Committee, Dr Kalita revealed that former CEC Hari Shankar Brahma had allegedly struck off some important paragraphs of the original report. The allegations were leveled against Brahma by three members of the Committee namely Dr Rohini Kumar Barua, Anil Bhattacharya and Ajay Dutta.
Dr Kalita also told Northeast Now that the organization had submitted memorandum protesting the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 before the JPC in Guwahati on May 7.
“We will continue our protest against the Bill until the BJP-led Central government withdraws it,” he added.

Significantly, Dr Kalita urged the Assam government for inclusion of a new provision in the population policy to bar the candidates having more than two children from contesting elections.
