BJP boat Tripura election Gaurav Gogoi

Ahead of the Assam bypolls, the deputy leader of Congress in Lok Sabha and Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi wants the party to take on the BJP alone.

Gaurav Gogoi expressed his view during a one-on-one meeting with Assam Pradesh Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah on the future of the Mahajot in the state.

“I believe it is time for the Indian National Congress party in Assam to be independent of the Mahajot,” Gaurav Gogoi said.

“The Congress party is the only party that can take on the BJP,” the two-time Kaliabor MP asserted.

“For that, we need to strengthen our party organisation across Assam including those constituencies where there are MLAs of the Mahajot,” he said.

The Mahajot was finalised a few months before the 2021 elections.

“Prior to that, the party has fulfilled its duty as an Opposition party on its own,” the Congress leader said.

“Going forward inside the Assam Assembly, the party may still consult with other opposition parties if and when the BJP government brings anti-people policies,” he said.

Stating that the people have huge expectations from the Congress party, Gogoi said if they would fulfil those expectations, the party will be able to “form the next government in 2026”.

“These sentiments are not only mine but that of thousands of party workers across the state,” he added.

Mahajot comprises Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Hagrama Mohilary-led Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), Left parties and regional party, Anchalik Gana Morcha.
