In a jolt to Golaghat Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), more than 50 party workers from Bokakhat joined the regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Monday.

The BJP workers formally joined the AGP in a meeting held at Bokakhatb circuit house which was presided over by Bokakhat district AGP president Jagat Kalita.

Bokakhat constituency is represented by AGP president and agriculture minister Atul Bora. AGP is a key ally of the Sarabananda Sonowal-led government in Assam.

The BJP workers that include Nilotpal Rajkhowa, Biju Borgohain, Dimple Dhekial Phukan, Alok Barua who have joined the regional party said they have been fed up with the communal poetics being played by the saffron party.

Welcoming the BJP workers AGP leader Jibeswar Bora said that common people have lost confidence on BJP in Assam.

In January this year, the former president of Dima Hasao BJP Deben Thaosen along with a number of his supporters joined the Dima Hasao unit of AGP.

While joining AGP, Thaosen said he the BJP leaders are not at all in favour of tribal people and also not interested to strengthen their party in Dima Hasao, rather they are very much interested to work only for their own benefit.

“They can never do any good to the people of Dima Hasao. On the contrary, I have seen that the AGP Government in the past had given more power to NCHAC, and many more privileges were provided to the district of Dima Hasao during the erstwhile AGP regime,” He had said.
