The Gauhati High Court has registered a suo moto PIL in regards to vaccination of inmates lodged in different jails of Assam.

Reportedly, volunteers of Pratidhwani after visiting both district and central jails in Assam, allegedly found that, except the inmates of Silchar jail, inmates of no other jail have been vaccinated.
The Gauhati High Court has directed the Assam Government to file an affidavit within three weeks, updating on the process of vaccination of jail inmates.

“List after three weeks. In the meantime, Mr TC Chutia, learned additional senior government advocate, Assam shall file a reply affidavit,” the court order said.
“During recent enquiries of Pratidhwani to different district and central jails, it has come to its knowledge that in spite of the COVID-19 vaccination drive being carried out all over the country in a phased manner and in spite of the fact that the jail authorities and the officials working in different district jails of Assam have been vaccinated, the inmates have not been vaccinated till date, except in central jail, Silchar,” the application of Pratidhwani read.

Till date, as many as 2513 COVID-19 positive cases have emerged from different jails in Assam.
