Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday condemned the murder of Madhurjya Barman in Nalbari and the assault on a young girl, Mridumudra Deka, urging greater vigilance and collective responsibility to ensure women’s safety.
In a statement, Gogoi described the incident as deeply disturbing and said it had saddened people across Assam.
“The tragic incident that took place in Nalbari has deeply saddened not only us but also the people of Assam as a whole,” he said.
Gogoi wished a speedy recovery to the injured girl, who is currently undergoing treatment, and expressed condolences over the death of Madhurjya Barman.
He also prayed for peace to the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family.
Highlighting the need for collective social responsibility, Gogoi said society must work together to make the environment safer for women and girls.
“It is the responsibility of all of us to make our society safer and more secure for our mothers, sisters, and daughters,” he said.
He further urged women and girls facing harassment, threats or abuse to seek legal action without fear or hesitation.
Referring to the Nalbari incident, Gogoi said society must learn from the tragedy and become more vigilant, responsible and proactive in ensuring women’s safety and security.
