Guwahati: Indiaโ€™s U-17 football team secured a spot in next yearโ€™s AFC U-17 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia after a thrilling 2-1 comeback win over Iran on Sunday in Ahmedabad. The victory marks Indiaโ€™s 10th appearance in the continental tournament.

For Assam, the triumph carried special significance. Assistant coach Subam Rabha, forward Rahan Ahmed, and goalkeeper Manashjyoti Baruah played key roles in a squad that never gave up despite trailing early.

Subam said, โ€œThese 40 days with the national team taught me so much. Beating Iran to qualify is the biggest takeaway of my career.โ€

India, drawn in Group D, started with a 1-1 draw against Palestine and followed it with a 3-1 win over Chinese Taipei. A 0-2 loss to Lebanon made the Iran match a must-win.

Rahan, returning home to Sivasagar, said, โ€œOur mindset of not giving up helped us get past Iran. We stayed confident, gave our best, and achieved the result.โ€

The match mirrored Indiaโ€™s campaign, an early setback, relentless pressure, a crucial equaliser, and a late winner earned through persistence. India finished with seven points, level with Iran but ahead on head-to-head.

Subam, an AFC A Licence coach, described the experience as surreal. โ€œStanding in the dugout while the national anthem plays gives you goosebumps. Representing the country in any form is huge. The competition is intense; even a small mistake can cost you,โ€ he said.

He praised head coach Bibiano Fernandes for shaping Indiaโ€™s youth teams. โ€œFor Bibiano sir, the team always comes first. He motivates, teaches, and brings clarity that reflects on the pitch,โ€ Subam added.

The qualification highlights Indiaโ€™s preparation, belief, and collective effort. For Assamโ€™s football fans, it was a proud moment, three of their own stood tall on the national stage.
