How asymptomatic patients are treated; my Covid hospital experience

Amid unabated surge in the number of Covid-19 cases in Assam, majority of the patients are getting cured from the deadly disease and are being discharged from the hospitals.

I am also a Covid-19 survivor and was discharged from a hospital in Guwahati, after my complete recovery on July 11.

I had tested positive for COVID-19 during screening on July 6 even though I had no such flu symptoms—that is I was an asymptomatic patient.

On July 17, I had written regarding the non-supply of food and ration by the state health department and Kamrup (Metro) district administration during my home-quarantine period after I recovered from COVID-19.

Reacting to what I wrote, health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on July 18 had said that instead of thanking the government and healthcare professionals, who treated me putting their life into risk, I asked for food.

However, I would like to say that before I left the hospital, I thanked all the medical staff for taking care of me. In fact, I made a post on Facebook expressing my gratitude to the medical staff.

Now, with reference to minister Sarma’s remarks, I would like to share a few words about my experience at the hospital.

I was taken to government Ayurvedic College Hospital at city’s Jalukbari area on July 7 in an ambulance.  My brother, who is also a Covid-19 positive, was also taken with me.

After mandatory registration formalities, we were allotted two beds in a cabin and were offered tea and snacks.

In the meantime, a health worker had came to our cabin and asked us what we would prefer to have for dinner—rice or rice. We told him that we want to take rice.

A team of doctors and nurse came to our cabin before we sleep and inquired about our health and food quality provided from the hospital.

On being informed that our health condition is ok, they offered us a strip of Vitamin B-Complex tablets and advised us take one tablet daily. They also checked oxygen level on our body and found normal. They used to continue the process for two-three times everyday.

We were served bread-egg or roti-sabji for breakfast, fish or meat for lunch and vegetarian meal for dinner.

We had to use common toilet as we were kept in a big room with six beds.

On July 11, were discharged from hospitals after our second test results come out negative.

As per Covid-19 protocol, we have been undergoing 14-day home quarantine and it will be over on July 25.

I am glad that I have been able to overcome the disease. I once again would like to thank the hospital authorities as well as the health department for taking care of me.
