Assam was the epicenter of massive anti-CAA protests that rocked the Country back in 2019 and 2020.
People in lakhs across Assam took to streets and demonstrated against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) brought by the BJP.
As many as 5 innocent lives were lost in police firing in different parts of Assam during the anti-CAA protests.
Among those who lost their lives were 17-year-old Sam Stafford, who died in police firing during a protest against the CAA in Guwahati.
This was not the first time that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been caught spreading mis-information.
Earlier in the month, while addressing an election rally in Upper Assam, Amit Shah had said that “none had died in police firing and that there were no protests in the last five years”.
Meanwhile, the Assam Congress has been maintaining that Amit Shah “wants to simply obliterate the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) uprising that happened in Assam”.
Top Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is in Assam campaigning for the party ahead of the third phase of the Assam Assembly elections, has slammed the BJP-led Assam Government for ordering the police to ‘fire’ upon unarmed civilians who were out on the streets to protest against the CAA in December 2019.
Rahul Gandhi said that killing youth of the State during the anti-CAA protests in fact was an attempt by the BJP-Government in the State to ‘murder’ Assam.

“When I had come to meet family of Dipanjal Das (killed in Guwahati during anti-CAA protests in 2019), I felt that bullets weren’t fired at one youth, it was fired at Assam. It was attempted to murder Assam. He wasn’t just a youth, he was an idea. He was Assam,” Rahul Gandhi said while addressing an election rally at Chaygaon in Kamrup (Rural) district.
