Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced a slew of schemes meant for the welfare of women and students in Mangaldai.

Minister Sarma, who visited Mangaldai for the first time as the minister of BJP government, took part several public functions here.

Participating in a programme at Mangaldai Gandhi Maidan for the ceremonial distribution of cheque of Rs 10, 000 each to 100 self-help group (SHG) s, Minister  Sarma announced to launch a new scheme called “Kanaklata Women Empowerment” scene from the next month.

“Chief Minister will launch the scheme on April 1 and this scheme will boost the SHGs. A financial aid of Rs 25,000 each would be given to the SHGs in the first year and the amount would be enhanced to two lakh in the fourth year,” Sarma said.

Sarma said that eight new women colleges would be set up in the state adding that scooty will be distributed to one lakh meritorious girl students besides providing pensions to unmarried girl.

Earlier, inaugurating a new administrative building at Mangaldai College built at a cost of Rs one crore fifty lakhs, the Education Minister laid stress on the reforms of the education system of the State.

He announced to offer free textbooks to the poor students of Higher Secondary standards from the new academic year starting from June next.

He also declared to expansion of the free admission scheme to the third year of Degree course. Education Minister also assured a grant of Rs two crore for completion of the swimming pool and a new library of the college.

Later talking to mediapersons, Sarma promised to make the one hundred bedded Maternity and Child Health unit of the Mangaldai Civil Hospital, built at a cost of Rs 70 crore in 2016, operational soon.
