A high-powered meeting of the Brahmaputra Board will be held on December 30 to be chaired by Union Road Transport, Water Resources and Ganga Rejuvenation Minister Nitin Gadkari.
The meeting which will witness participation of all the chief ministers of the northeastern states and West Bengal will review the functioning of the Board in the region on December 30 at Kaziranga National Park.
This was stated in an official press statement issued by the Majuli district administration on Sunday.
The release stated Gadkari will chair the ninth meeting of the high powered review board of the Brahmaputra Board at Iora Resort near the Kaziranga National Park.
The Chief Ministers of eight northeastern states and West Bengal along with the Union Ministers for finance, transport, power, agriculture are the members of high powered review board.
The release quoting the Joint Secretary (Policy & Planning), Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and also the Chairman of Brahmaputra Board and Member-Secretary of the high powered review board, Sanjay Kundu, who is presently stationed in Majuli, said the restructuring of the Brahmaputra Board would be discussed by the members.
The press statement further stated that other key issues to be discussed in the meeting will be assigning of works of development of master plans, survey and investigation and detailed project report for water resources in the North-east to WAPCOS, a PSU under the Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation.
The last meeting of the high powered review board was held on June 19 last year at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.
Earlier on December 29, Gadkari along with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will lay the foundation stone of the Rs 237-crore project – ‘Protection of Majuli Island from Flood and Erosion’ taken up by the Brahmaputra Board at Rawnapar in Majuli, the release added.
Gadkari will also lay the foundation stone of the Brahmaputra Board Complex, costing Rs 40 crore, in the river island. The complex will include an office, residential houses, a guest house, a godown and a skill centre, the release said.
In the same function, Sonowal will lay foundation stones of 19 schemes for mitigation of flood and erosion in Majuli.
The projects to be executed by the State Water Resources Department will cost Rs 61 crore, the release added.
