A Twitterati, Jinti Deka, in a tweet said: “Handique Girls’ College withdraws from @kheloindia and any such programs in the near future as a mark of Non-cooperation towards government against CAA.”

The 3rd Khelo India Youth Games began in Guwahati on December 10. The mega sports event will continue till January 22.

Khelo India Youth Games was supposed to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But, due to the continued anti-CAA protests across Assam, Modi cancelled the programme.

Later, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Kiren Rijiju declared the Khelo India games open.

The anti-CAA protests in Assam, spearheaded by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), have also been supported by the students and teachers from schools, colleges and universities across the state.

Along with students from other educational institutes of the state, students from Handique Girls’ College also continue to participate in protest programmes against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Guwahati.

Several students from the college were injured in police atrocities during an anti-CAB (now CAA) protest in Guwahati on December 11, 2019.

Informing about the police action on the students, a Twiteratti, Uttam Pegu, on December 12, 2020, said: “Students from Cotton College, B Barooah College, Handique College and others from Guwahati protested against CAB yesterday (Dec 11, 2019) in Guahati, got beaten by Police. In the evening, they burnt buses and then curfew and internet ban imposed.”

A delegation of Assam Students’ Forum (ASF) including representatives of Handique Girls’ College moved the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) and lodged a complaint against police baton-charge on students, male police personnel tackling girl students during the anti-CAB (now CAA) protest.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) became an Act after President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the bill on December 12, 2019.

Through a Gazzette Notification, the CAA came into effect across the country on January 10, 2020.
