NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) has roped in striker Asamoah Gyan, who led Ghana to the quarterfinals of 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Former Ghana captain Gyan, who has played four World Cups for Ghana, is all set to replace NEUFC’s top scorer of the last season, Nigerian Bartholomew Ogbeche, who has joined Kerala Blasters.

The sixth season of ISL 2019-20, to be kick-started on October 20, will conclude in March 2020.

The forward and former captain of the Ghana football team is the all-time highest scorer for his national side with 51 strikers in 107 appearances.

According to reports, 33-year-old Gyan, who will arrive in Guwahati this weekend, has played for 10 clubs in three continents in his career.

The footballer has experience of playing for several European clubs like Udinese, Rennes and Sunderland.

Media reports quoted NEUFC’s executive director Priya Runchal as saying: “We are thrilled to have a player of Gyan’s caliber and experience join our squad.”

“He has continuously delivered excellence at the highest of levels of world football and we are confident that he will add a lot of firepower on the pitch here,” said Runchal.

Gyan has also expressed his excitement over his latest leg of his career.

Reports quoted Gyan as saying, “I am extremely excited to start this new chapter in my career.”

“I have heard great things about NorthEast United FC and the Indian Super League and I am thrilled to be part of it for the upcoming season.”

“I am confident that we can better the wonderful season the club had last year,” said Gyan.

NorthEast United FC, which was formed in 2014 and co-owned by actor John Abraham, had their highest finish in ISL last season as they claimed fourth place.
