Come 2019, the Guwahati passenger ropeway project will be completed. This ropeway project will connect the northern and southern banks of the city. The foundation stone of the project was laid on December 4, 2009. Although the ropeway project was stopped in February, 2011 work resumed in 2016.

The distance of the ropeway will be 1.8 kilometres with south bank station inside the forest campus near Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner’s office. The north bank station will be at a hillock behind Doul Govinda temple.

There will be two cabins with passenger carrying capacity of 30 persons in each cabin. Samir Damodor Ropeways Pvt Ltd is constructing the ropeway project.

Originally the project was scheduled to have been commissioned in May 2011 but work was stopped by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in February the same year. The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority then got the permission in 2015.

Though the permission to continue the ropeway project was received from the Centre in 2015, the then state government did not immediately sanction the funds. It was only after the new government came to power that the project was put on the priority list.

During the monsoon season the work was stalled as the high water level of the river caused delays.
