Guwahati girl selected by Balliol College of Oxford University to study oriental studies

Guwahati girl – Arani S Hazarika – has been selected for a course in oriental studies at the prestigious Oxford University. 

Arani, resident of Ananda Nagar in Noonmati area in Guwahati has been selected by the Balliol College to study Sanskrit language.

Balliol College is one of the constituent colleges of the Oxford University in England.  

One of Oxford’s oldest colleges, Balliol College was founded in 1263.

Speaking to Northeast Now, Arani S Hazarika expressed happiness after being selected for studying at the University. 

“Since early childhood, I dreamt of studying at the Oxford University. And, at the same time I developed an interest in studying the Hindu religion. Then later I came to know about the course – Religion and oriental Studies that the Oxford University has,” Arani said. 

She added: “I applied for the course. Then I was asked to write an essay on the topic – ‘Should religion be studied at a secular university?’. Later I was selected to sit for interviews.” 

“After several rounds of interviews, I was offered open conditional offer by the Balliol College to pursue oriental studies course in Sanskrit language,” Arani further said.

Notably, Arani S Hazarika is the daughter of veteran journalist and assistant editor of The Assam Tribune newspaper – Partha Pratim Hazarika and Sudakshina Bhuyan, a well know Feng Shui Vastu astrology consultant. 

Arani had appeared the class 12 CBSE exam from the Holy Child school in Guwahati. 

“I would like to become a writer and research scholar someday in the future,” Arani said.
