Doomdooma: Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Assam government, citing figures from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2024 report.
He alleged that the state continues to witness a disturbing rise in crimes against women, children, and vulnerable sections despite repeated claims of improved law and order by the ruling dispensation.
In a post shared on Facebook on May 9, Gogoi referred to NCRB statistics for Assam and said the data presented a โdeeply concerning pictureโ under what he described as the BJPโs โdouble engine government.โ
According to the figures highlighted by Gogoi, Assam recorded 9,556 violent crimes during 2024. The data also showed 10,546 crimes against women, including 927 rape cases and 1,787 incidents of kidnapping and abduction. The state further registered 933 murder cases during the year, he stated.
Quoting additional NCRB figures, Gogoi said Assam recorded 743 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage modesty. He also pointed to 2,907 cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act involving girl child victims and said the state witnessed 5,871 crimes against children in 2024.
Criticising the BJP government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gogoi alleged that after โa decade of publicity campaigns, communal politics, image management, and political drama,โ ordinary citizens, particularly women and children, still do not feel secure.
โIn a state where thousands of women and children become victims of violence and abuse every year, it cannot be called โsafeโ as repeatedly claimed by the BJP and the Chief Minister,โ Gogoi said in his statement posted on social media.
The Congress MP further asserted that governance should be measured not merely through speeches or publicity exercises, but through the ability of the administration to ensure safety, justice, and dignity for citizens.
He also claimed that the people of Assam are seeking a โhealthy, secure and inclusive societyโ rather than what he termed a โpublicity-driven and divisive government.โ
