Gauhati High Court rejects CBI appeal against acquittal of Bhagya Kalita in Karabi-Dubori murder case

The Gauhati High Court has dismissed an appeal filed by CBI against the acquittal of Guwahati-based contractor Bhagya Kalita in the sensational murder case of a woman and her minor daughter.

A bench comprising Justice Suman Shyam and Justice Parthivjyoti Saikia on Wednesday dismissed the criminal appeal filed by CBI assailing the judgment of the trial court acquitting Bhagya Kalita and another person of charges of murder under section 302 IPC.

Senior counsels A.K. Bhattacharya and D.K. Mishra appeared for the accused in the said appeal.

Kalita along with another person was charged for the murder of Karabi Das, wife of Ujjal Kr Das and their minor daughter Dubori way back in 1995.

In 2017, a lower court acquitted accused contractor Bhagya Kalita and his driver Fatikur Ali 22 years after the murder of Karabi and her daughter.

The CBI had chargesheeted Bhagya Kalita and two of his associates who were allegedly involved in the killing of the mother-daughter duo.

Both Karabi and her daughter were murdered in 1995 at their residence at Ambari in Guwahati.
