Former Congress MLA Sarat Saikia passed away in a hospital in Kolkata on Thursday. He was 77.
Family sources said Saikia breathed his last at 10.10 am at Rabindranath Tagore Hospital in Kolkata.
He was admitted to the hospital on March 20 due to chronic kidney diseases and a kidney was transplanted few days back.
Born in 1942 at Dumordulong village in upper Assam’s Sivasagar district, Saikia completed his graduation from Dibrugarh University.
He joined the Congress after completing his graduation and was elected as an MLA from Mahmora LAC for three times in 2001, 2006 and 2011.
Saikia deserted the Congress party before the 2016 Assam Assembly polls and switched to the BJP.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has condoled the demise of Saikia.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing away of former MLA of Mahmora LAC Sarat Saikia. Late Saikia was a man dedicated to the cause of public service and was admired by all for his amiable personality.
“He made immense contribution for uphold ethical politics and worked to empower the marginalized communities. His demise is an irreparable loss to the political landscape of the state,” Sonowal said in a statement.
The chief minister also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and expressed his empathy with the bereaved family of late Saikia.
