Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi passes away at 86

Former Assam chief minister and a Congress stalwart Tarun Gogoi passed away at 5.34 pm on Monday at the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH).

This was confirmed by Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

He was 86.

Gogoi was admitted to the GMCH on November 1, 2020 for the second time after he was discharged on October 25 following 60 days of hospitalization.

He was re-admitted to the ICU of GMCH at 10.30 pm on November 1 after he had complained of breathing problems.

The former chief minister was first admitted to the GMCH on August 26 after he tested positive for COVID-19.

Gogoi was born on October 11, 1934 at Rangajan Tea Estate in erstwhile Sivasagar district, now Jorhat district, to Dr Kamaleshwar Gogoi, a medical practitioner at Rangajan Tea Estate and Usha Gogoi.

Gogoi, who started his political career in 1968 as a member of the Municipal Board, Jorhat, served as the chief minister of Assam for three times from 2001 to 2016.

He was the longest-serving chief minister of Assam.

Gogoi, who started his primary education at No.26 Rangajan Nimna Buniyadi Vidyalaya, shifted to Jorhat Madrassa School where he studied up to Class IV.

He studied at Bholaguri High School near Badulipar Tea Estate till Class VI.

Tarun Gogoi, who was called as Punakon by his parents, admitted to Jorhat Government High School in 1949 from where he cleared HSLC Examination.

He completed graduation from Jagannath Barooah College in Jorhat.

After graduation, Gogoi did LLB from Gauhati University.

Gogoi was elected as Lok Sabha MP for six terms.

He first represented Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency from 1971-85 and later elected from Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency from 1991-96 and 1998-2002).

Gogoi married Dolly Gogoi on July 30, 1972.

They have a daughter, Chandrima Gogoi and son, Gaurav Gogoi, who is the MP from Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency.

Tarun Gogoi was elected as the joint secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC) in 1976 when Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of the country.

When Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister, Gogoi served as the general secretary of the AICC from 1985-90.

Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao appointed Gogoi as the Union Minister.

He served as the Union Minister of State for Food & Food Processing Industry departments from 1991-96.

Gogoi was appointed as the president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) in 1986-90.

He also served as APCC president for a second term in 1996.

Gogoi has served as MLA for four terms.

He first represented Margherita Assembly constituency in 1996-98 and was representing the Titabar Assembly constituency since 2001.

In 2001, Gogoi became the Chief Minister of Assam and remained as the CM for three consecutive terms till 2016.
