Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi cremated

Former three-time Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi was cremated at Nabagraha Cremation Ground in Guwahati on Thursday with full state honours.

The last rites of the former chief minister were performed in presence of Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and thousands of other people.

The cremation was also attended by Assam Congress president Ripun Bora, state BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, a host of ministers, MPs, MLAs, politicians, government officials, leaders of various organizations, well-wishers and family members.

The funeral pyre was lit by the former chief minister’s son and Kaliabor MP, Gaurav Gogoi.

Before the cremation, floral tributes were paid to the mortal remains of Tarun Gogoi by Assam chief minister Sonowal, Tarun Gogoi’s wife Dolly Gogoi and many others present at the cremation ground.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) Assam in-charge, Jitendra Singh also paid tribute to the departed party leader.

Gogoi’s daughter Chandrima, daughter-in-law Elizabeth Colburn and hundreds of people from Titabor Assembly constituency, which was represented by the former CM, also attended the cremation.

Earlier, in the morning on Thursday, the mortal remains of Tarun Gogoi were taken to his official residence at Dispur from Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra.

Before reaching the cremation ground, Gogoi’s mortal remains were taken to the church at Rukmini Gaon, the namghar at Zoo Road, Burha Jame Masjid at Ambari, Ugratara Temple at Uzanbazar.

Thousands of Gogoi’s well-wishers followed the vehicle that carried his mortal remains on the city streets.

People from different parts of the state and across the Northeastern region paid tributes to the former chief minister at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra where Gogoi’s mortal remains were kept from Tuesday evening to Wednesday.

Gogoi passed away at Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) on Monday at 5.34 pm due to post-Covid19 complications.

The Nabagraha Cremation Ground committee engaged four people for the cremation of former chief minister Gogoi.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was once the right-hand man of Gogoi, monitored the entire process of the arrangement for Gogoi’s cremation.
