Five trucks loaded with illegal Burmese supari (betel nut) were seized at National Highway point in Silchar on Wednesday.
Acting on a tip off, police personnel of Rangirkhari Police Outpost of Silchar laid this trap to catch hold of them while they come down from Mizoram.

As planned, things fell into place and all five trucks were rounded up. But, in this ensuing melee, one truck driver managed to escape under the cover of darkness leaving behind his vehicle, while four others, were caught red handed on the spot by the police sleuths.
These truck drivers were traveling without any valid documents to carry these goods and were unable to produce when questioned by the police. After a thorough check up of all the five trucks a whopping 337 sacks of Burmese supari were found which as per police sources, would be valued at more than crores of rupees.
The four truck drivers are Kalam Uddin aged 24 years from Kalain, Abdul Mukit aged 38 from Patherkandi, Anwar Hussain aged 29 from Lalacherra and Biswajit Debbarma aged 28 from Agartala of Tripura.

On being interrogated Kalam Uddin, one of the truck drivers said, “We reached Aizawl to unload goods and while returning with empty trucks a person at Kolasib offered us to carry these sacks and drop them at Ramnagar on the outskirts of Silchar Town. We just wanted to make some easy money for which accepted the deal.”
However, the police super of Cachar, SP Rakesh Roshan is not ready to believe Kalam Uddin’s statement whole heartedly.
Speaking to Northeast Now he said, “We have arrested even the owners of the truck. No one is going to be spared in this crime. A few months back we have apprehended similar such movement of illegal trucks entering our district and such practice came to a halt. But, we had specific information of the movement of five trucks coming from Mizoram on Tuesday for which we laid the trap and were successful.”
Meanwhile, police are also investigating into the matter and have identified the dealer of these illegal Burmese supari who hails from Badarpur under Karimganj district in Assam.
