Guwahati: In a significant push to embed environmental consciousness in classrooms, WWF-India on Friday felicitated five top-performing schools in Assam under its flagship ‘Mission Prakriti’ programme, recognising their leadership in driving sustainability at the grassroots level.
The awards ceremony, held at the State Mission Office of Samagra Shiksha on March 19, brought together senior education officials and environmental leaders, underscoring the growing emphasis on climate awareness in the state’s school ecosystem.
The five schools honoured for the 2025–26 academic year are:
- Natun Fatasil Town HS, Kamrup (M)
- Sakai Khangia High School, Jorhat
- Bishnu Jyoti MES, Sonitpur
- PM Shri Jamira Higher Secondary School, Hailakandi
- PM Shri Gossaigaon Girls High School, Kokrajhar
Tinsukia district was adjudged the Best District for its standout implementation, while nodal officers from ten districts were also recognised for their active roles.
Senior officials present at the event included Khanindra Das, OSD, Samagra Shiksha Assam; Dr. Nirada Devi, Director, SCERT; Suranjana Senapati, Additional Secretary, Elementary Education Department; Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Director, WWF-India (Assam & Arunachal Pradesh); and Ranjit Chowdhury, Chairperson, Assam Advisory Board.
Highlighting the programme’s impact, Bhattacharyya described ‘Mission Prakriti’ as “more than a programme, it is a movement,” noting that students are not only learning sustainability concepts but actively implementing them in schools and communities.
A student-led initiative, ‘Mission Prakriti’ focuses on five key themes, biodiversity, water, waste, food, and energy, aimed at transforming schools into environmentally sustainable spaces. In Assam alone, the programme has been rolled out across 4,723 ICT-enabled schools in all 35 districts, reaching thousands of students and educators.
Nationally, the initiative spans over 23,000 government schools, engaging 56,000 teachers and more than 5.6 lakh students across seven states.
Each winning school was represented by its principal, coordinating teacher, and members of the student-led ‘Green Cabinet’, who received certificates and medals. Awards, including trophies, citations, and mementos, were also presented to schools and district representatives.
Officials at the event stressed that empowering students as environmental stewards is key to building climate-resilient communities, with ‘Mission Prakriti’ emerging as a model for integrating sustainability into mainstream education.
The ceremony concluded with a renewed call to expand the movement across Assam, positioning schools as catalysts in the state’s green transition.
