Senior BJP leader and former external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj died of heart attack at All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) on Tuesday night.
She was 67.
Swaraj was taken to AIIMS at 10.15 pm and was admitted to the emergency ward.
The former union minister had a kidney transplant in 2016 and opted out of contesting Lok Sabha polls 2019 due to health issues.
Immediately after news spread, political leaders from the Northeast have deeply condoled her demise.
Condolence messages continue to pour in.
Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on his Twitter handle said: “A light has just, shockingly, gone out of our lives.”
“Deeply pained at demise of our beloved leader Smt Sushma Swaraj ji.”
“A towering politician with incredible career, her loss is shocking. I am at loss of words to express my grief,” he added.
Tripura chief minister Biplab Kr Deb tweeted: “Deeply saddened by the passing away of my beloved elder sister Sushma Swarajji.”
“The nation has lost a foremost leader who devoted her life for the welfare of the people of India. Om Shanti.”
“Extremely tragic and sad news!” he added.
He also termed her as “one of tallest woman leaders of Indian politics with unmatched oratory skills and humble background”.
“Deepest condolences to her family and followers,” he further tweeted.

Meghalaya chief minister and president of National People’s Party (NPP) Conrad K. Sangma on his Twitter handle stated: “I am shocked to hear that beloved former Union Minister Sushma Swaraj ji passed away.”
He expressed his condolence to the bereaved family members and prayed to “almighty to grant her eternal peace”.
“She will be missed and remembered by politicians across party line,” he added.
Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh in his condolence message on his Twitter handle said: “I am deeply saddened to hear that beloved former Union Minister Sushma Swaraj ji passed away.”
“I express my condolence to the bereaved family members and pray to almighty to grant her eternal peace. She will be missed and remembered for forever,” he further tweeted.
Senior Congress leader and former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi in his condolence message on Twitter handle said: “Deeply anguished to learn about the untimely demise of senior BJP leader Smti Sushma Swaraj.”
“My condolences to her family members in this hour of grief. May her soul rest in heavenly adobe,” he added.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora said: “Shocked and saddened at the demise of former Union Minister Sushma Swaraj.”
“I pray for eternal peace of the departed soul. Country has lost a very Gentle, Decent Parliamentarian & Administrator.”
