Apurba Kumar Sarma Barua, a former All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) leader and a junior engineer died in a road mishap on National Highway 15 near Baihata Chariali in Kamrup (rural) district on Monday.
Sarma Barua was serving in the Mangaldai Rural Road Division of the State PWD.

He died on the spot while the car he was driving from Mangaldai in Darrang district towards Guwahati, collided head-on with a truck from the opposite direction at around 8 am on Monday.
His wife, Jyotismita Sarma Barua, who was accompanying him, sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in North Guwahati in critical condition where she was reportedly undergoing treatment till filing of this report.
The news of the untimely demise of ever smiling and sober natured Apurba Kumar Sarma Barua has cast a pall of gloom in greater Mangldai including his residential area of Ward No 7 at Mangaldai and his birth place Aulachowka village.

Apuraba Kumar Sarma Barua, who could easily win any hearts with his polished behaviour and conduct, was an active worker of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) during the Assam Movement from 1979 to 1985 and rendered his sincere service as the finance secretary of Mangaldai District Students’ Union.
During his student days, he was elected as the general secretary of Mangaldai College Students’ Union.
Besides his wife, he has left behind two grown-up daughters.
He was the eldest son of Nabin Sarma Barua and Nayantara Devi of Boinaoja village at Aulachowka under Mangaldai police station.
