Within 24-hour of the publication of much-awaited draft NRC on December 31 midnight, many people are now bemused to find either their names or names of some of their family members missing from the list. This has generated grievances among the common people as the published draft NRC has brought to the fore many discrepancies causing inconveniences to people.
Interestingly, many prominent figures of Assam politics find their names missing from the list. Reports pouring in from different sources confirmed that Dhubri MP Badaruddin Ajmal, former Assam minister Dr Ardhendu Dey, AIUDF MLA from South Abhayapuri Ananta Kumar Malo, Dhing MLA Aminul Islam, Rupahihat MLA Nurul Huda’s names did not figure in the draft NRC. This has raised many an eyebrow. However, ULFA-I supremo Paresh Baruah’s name figured in the list. ULFA pro-talk leader Anup Chetia also reportedly figured in the list with his address mentioned as Dhaka.
If reports are to be believed then one relative of AASU adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya could not make it to the first NRC draft. On the other hand, names of All Assam Minority Students’ Union president Ajijur Rahman, and two general secretaries Rejaul Karim Sarkar and Ainuddin Ahmed are reportedly missing from the list.
The government as well as NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela allayed the fear in the minds of the people and said they should not panic as they will get enough chance to incorporate their names in the NRC.
