Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: Ahead of the Parliamentary elections, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sent a message to the electors, suggesting they not waste their votes by voting in favour of the Congress as their winning candidates will anyway defect to the saffron party.

Addressing the media during his campaign trail to the state’s Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency, CM Sarma said that there is no point in voting for the grand old party candidates as, if elected, they will jump ship to BJP.

On being asked if the Congress will win any seat in Assam in the upcoming general elections, the Chief Minister said that it is a matter of doubt as it is also important for the Congress candidates to remain aligned with the party till the elections.

“Far from winning a seat, it matters whether the Congress candidates stay in the party or not. You have to ask them whether they will remain at the party or not? Now no one wants to stay in Congress, everyone wants to join the BJP,” he said.

CM Sarma claimed that barring one, he can make all the Congress candidates in the fray shift to BJP.

“All the Congress candidates in the fray in this election, I can bring everyone to the BJP barring one candidate, and this credit goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi is the sun, we are the moon,” CM Sarma said.

Referring to minority votes being a decisive factor in a few constituencies of Assam, CM Sarma said that it is not a matter of concern for the BJP as the party has been working more towards the welfare of the minorities than the Congress had done.

“The minority factor is not a cause of concern for us as we have been doing so much for the cause of the minorities. What the minorities have got during our regime, they didn’t get during the Congress’ rule. Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas is what matters, so they will definitely vote for BJP, everyone will vote for us this time,” he added.

In response to Gaurav Gogoi’s chances of getting elected this time, the Chief Minister said that the former will lose by a margin of 1.5 to 3 lakh votes.

The BJP strongman also claimed that there is no opposition, and if called, their leaders will shift to the saffron party camp.
