Ministry of DoNER will provide Rs 28 crore for setting up Brahmaputra Study Centre โ€“ a one stop destination for research in Gauhati University.

DoNER minister Dr Jitendra Singh in his twitter handle said, โ€œMinistry of #Northeast @MDoNER_India to provide Rs. 28 crore for setting up โ€œBrahmaputra Study Centreโ€ in Gauhati University. Separate block to be constructed within the campus. โ€œOne stop destinationโ€ for research related to one of the worldโ€™s largest river systems.โ€

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted, โ€œGreat news. The mighty Brahmaputra has shaped our land & economy for millennia. A one stop research centre will open new avenues for fully utilising our enormous water resources for the regionโ€™s development.โ€

The state government has approved the proposal by the Gauhati University authorities in this regard in February this year.

The University, in collaboration with the North Eastern Council (NEC), held a two-day national conclave focused on the Brahmaputra Basin from February 12.

In order to further encourage discussions and measure into improving the trans-boundary characteristics of the basin, the University authorities have taken the decision to set up โ€˜Centre for Brahmaputra Studiesโ€™, in order to encourage focused research, capacity building and come up with preventive measures to various problems pertinent to the Brahmaputra basin.
