Ministry of DoNER will provide Rs 28 crore for setting up Brahmaputra Study Centre – a one stop destination for research in Gauhati University.
DoNER minister Dr Jitendra Singh in his twitter handle said, “Ministry of #Northeast @MDoNER_India to provide Rs. 28 crore for setting up “Brahmaputra Study Centre” in Gauhati University. Separate block to be constructed within the campus. “One stop destination” for research related to one of the world’s largest river systems.”
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted, “Great news. The mighty Brahmaputra has shaped our land & economy for millennia. A one stop research centre will open new avenues for fully utilising our enormous water resources for the region’s development.”
The state government has approved the proposal by the Gauhati University authorities in this regard in February this year.
The University, in collaboration with the North Eastern Council (NEC), held a two-day national conclave focused on the Brahmaputra Basin from February 12.
In order to further encourage discussions and measure into improving the trans-boundary characteristics of the basin, the University authorities have taken the decision to set up ‘Centre for Brahmaputra Studies’, in order to encourage focused research, capacity building and come up with preventive measures to various problems pertinent to the Brahmaputra basin.
