The Assam government has put all the districts of the state on alert following inputs from the meteorology department regarding probable impact of cyclonic storm Fani in Assam and other northeastern states.

The government has asked the district administration in each of the districts of the state to remain on alert during the cyclonic storm which is expected to hit Assam and other northeastern region from the morning of May 4 to the evening of May 5.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Guwahati said the severe cyclonic storm Fani had already hit the coastal areas of Odisha and likely to enter the northeastern states from the morning of April 4.

“The Fani will accompany strong wind up to speed of 115 kms per hour in the beginning but it decreases as it affects northeastern region. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Goalpara,Bongaigaon, Chirang, Barpeta, Kamrup (R) & Udalguri with isolated extremely heavy falls over South Salmara Mankachar & Baksa districts. There will be strong wind,” said deputy director general of RMC, Guwahati Sanjay Shaw.

He said that the cyclonic storm will move towards Bangladesh on May 5 where the speed will be reduced further.

The Assam government has asked all the deputy commissioners and district police to remain on alert and to extend their help to the people in case of any eventuality.

Assam government has evacuated over 100 pilgrims on Thursday who had gone to Odisha.

The government in coordination with the Eastern Railway had arranged three special trains to bring the pilgrims from Odisha to Kolkata.

Meanwhile, Assam and some other parts of the northeatern states are witnessing light to moderate rains since Friday morning.

The officials of the Airport Authority of India at Guwahati also said that departure of most of the inbound and outbound flight from Guwahati and Kolkata have been cancelled from 3 pm on Friday till 8 am on Saturday.
