Leader of the Opposition in Assam Debabrata Saikia held Dima Hasao district administration responsible for the January 25 incident of police firing at Maibang that claimed two lives.

Debabrata Saikia, accompanied by two Congress MLAs Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Rupjyoti Kurmi, met members of the various organizations of the district at the circuit house and took stock of the situation.  Members of Dimasa Students’ Union, Jadike Naiso Hosom, Dimasa Mothers’ Association were present in the meeting.

He said the Dima Hasao district administration had failed to tackle the situation as a result two innocent persons lost their lives.

Saikia criticized Dima Hasao Deputy Commissioner for his nonchalant attitude towards the people who went to submit memorandum against RSS leader Jagdamba Mall to the district administration. “DC kept them waiting for five hours,” Saikia said.

The January 25 bandh was called by Jadike Naiso Hosom (JNH), Dimasa Students’ Union (DSU), All Dimasa Students’ Union (ADSU), Dimasa Women’s Society (DSW) and Dimasa Mothers’ Association (DMA).

The protesting organizations sought clarification from the State and Central Governments regarding the media reports quoting RSS leader Jagdamba Mall that Dima Hasao district would come under Greater Nagalim.

The protestors who gathered in large number in Maibang Railway Station since the morning blocked the Silchar-bound train and staged protest demonstration.

They blocked the railway lines by placing boulders on the railway tracks. The situation turned tense when the railway tracks were displaced and the line was disconnected by the protestors. Police then started firing on the protestors that left two dead.
