Dibrugarh garbage
Whiff of foul smell greets citizens of Dibrugarh due to municipal workers' strike.

Dibrugarh stinks as strike called by Dibrugarh unit of All Assam Civic Bodies Workers’ Federation enters the third day on Saturday. The association has been demanding provincialiation of their services since long.

The association has demanded a clear cut staffing pattern for all municipal employees of the state. They are also demanding regularisation of the employment of all muster-roll, fixed pay and contractual employees in the municipalities of the state.

“Since 18 months we are not getting our salaries. But the government promised us to regularise our service and clear all our dues but still we are not getting anything,” a Dibrugarh Muncipal Board worker said.

All the employees of the DMB here including sweepers have refrained from their duties since Wednesday. The boycott has affected the hygiene and sanitation of the city immensely as surroundings in the city have remained littered and garbage piling up at dumping spots.

According to the federation, one of the eight demands include provincialisation of municipal workers based on a cabinet decision of the previous government taken on September 4, 2013.

“Dibrugarh stinks as garbages were dumped everywhere in the town. Some of the bins were overflowed with garbage. The town looks ugly because the garbage littered everywhere. The government should take up the matter and try to resolve it at the earliest,” Hariprasad Khound, a senior citizen of Dibrugarh said.

“If our problems remain unsolved then we will continue our strike for an indefinite period,” a DMB worker said.
