Meanwhile, a formal announcement on Hima Das’ qualification for the Tokyo Olympics is yet to be made.

Hima Das had stayed away from taking part in 400 metres run in any of the major events since her stellar performance at the 2018 Asian games in Jakarta owing to persistent back injury.

Nicknamed ‘Dhing Express’, Hima Das became the first Indian athlete to bag Gold medal in a track event at the World U-20 Championships held in 2018 at Tampere in Finland.

At the Asian Games 2018 held at Jakarta in Indonesia, Hima Das set a new national record in the 400 metres event by clocking 50.79 seconds.

Later, Hima Das along with MR Poovamma, Sarita Gayakwad and VK Vismaya won the women’s 4 × 400 metres relay clocking in the Asian Games 2018.

Hima also won a silver medal in the 4 × 400 metres mixed relay, which was held for the first time at Asian Games.

Later that year, Hima Das was conferred with Arjuna Award by President Ram Nath Kovind.

Hima Das is only the second athlete from Assam after Bhogeswar Baruah to win a gold medal at an international event.
