Dhemaji gears up for panchayat elections

The Dhemaji district administration has geared up for smooth conduct of the upcoming panchayat elections in the district.

Dhemaji Deputy Commissioner Roshni Aparanji Korati informed that the district would go to polls in the first phase on December 5 this year. She informed that of the total 522 polling stations, 227 had been identified as sensitive, while 28 identified as hyper-sensitive.

“We have taken all necessary steps to ensure adequate security throughout the district in view of the upcoming polls. Various elections cells are functioning under the supervision of senior administrative officer for smooth conduct of the election processes,” the DC informed.

According to sources, altogether 2,93,867 electors in Dhemaji district will exercise their franchise in 522 polling booths in the ensuing election. There are a total of 7 Zilla Parishad constituencies, 5 Anchalik Panchayats and 62 gaon panchayats in Dhemaji district.

Dhemaji District Election Officer Bharat Konwar said the nomination papers for the election would be received from November 12 to 15 and final list of contesting candidates would be shortlisted on November 19 next. The DEO also explained on ‘Model Code of Conduct’ for the election.

The district administration has sought active cooperation of the media in giving adequate publicity about the fair process of the election.

Meanwhile, political parties including ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), opposition Congress (I) and regional party-Sanmilita Gana Sakti (SGS) are gearing up electioneering activities to field their party candidates in the ensuing panchayat polls.

But, regional party Asom Gana Parishad is yet to start their political activities in the district.

The ruling BJP, Congress (I) and SGS have been conducting block level meetings for collection of applications from the aspiring candidates and preparing penal list of ticket contenders for the election. The parties also constituted selection committee in order to examine the ticket application and allotment of the tickets among the eligible contenders.
