Detection, detention of foreigners on in full swing in Assam’s Jorhat

With the final exercise of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) drawing to a close on July  31, the border branch of Jorhat police are on a spree to detect and arrest foreigners, some declared to be so  since the early 2000s.

On Tuesday, a person, who had been declared a foreigner by Jorhat Foreigners’ Tribunal, Jorhat in 2006 was arrested by the border police and sent to the detention centre within the Central Jail, Jorhat.

A police source said that 42-year-old Zahirul Islam, who reportedly hails from a village under South Salmora Police Station of Dhubri district, was apprehended from a rented house at Phansi Ali in Jorhat.

The source said in the past 20 days, 11 foreigners, mostly declared foreigners several years back, had been arrested by the Border branch of Jorhat police and lodged at the detention centre of Central Jail, Jorhat.

The source further said that though the detention centre within the Central Jail, had 191 inmates with 138 male and  53 female as on July 17,  the maximum had been arrested in the past one month.
