Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said: “Today is a very important day in the nation’s journey to decolonize ourselves. We began this journey in 1947, and today, we have achieved a crucial milestone.”
The newly introduced laws, collectively termed as the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), are poised to revolutionize India’s criminal justice framework.

“During the colonial era, all three penal codes, CrPC were designed to continue with the punitive measure,” the Assam chief minister said.
“Today, we have achieved a milestone where we have democratized our criminal laws, aligning them more closely with principles of fairness and justice.”
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita represents a comprehensive reform package, aiming to streamline legal processes, enhance judicial efficiency, and ensure equitable treatment within the criminal justice system.
Sarma expressed confidence that these reforms would contribute significantly to ensuring that the legal system serves all citizens more effectively.
