An awareness programme against child marriage and child trafficking was organised in Tangni Tea Estate near Mangaldai in Darrang district on Saturday.

The programme was organised by TNXT- a non-government organisation- in association with the Darrang District Child Protection Unit (DCPU).

Several speakers including Darrang District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Kobendra Warisha, chairperson of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Rajen Ch Das among others.

They spoke about the evil effects of child marriage and the high rates of child trafficking from the tea garden areas.

They also spoke in length about the high rates of alcohol consumption in the tea garden areas and how it leads to disturbing home and families, thereby misleading the children.

Other relevant issues including teenage pregnancy and high rates of anaemia among women and children were also discussed in the meeting.

The daylong awareness campaign also featured house to house visit of the tea garden labourers and awareness postering among others.
