The largest detention centre in Assam, which is spread over 25 bighas of land, is nearing completion in Matia in Goalpara district of Assam.

The detention centre built at a cost of Rs 45 crores will house 3000 inmates once the construction is completed.

According to the onsite engineers, the construction of the detention was scheduled to be completed in December itself.

“The construction was supposed to get over this month itself. But it got delayed due to the monsoons as the construction had to be put on hold,” they informed.

The detention centre will have 15 four-storey buildings and each building will house 200 inmates.

Apart from the detention centre in Matia, the Assam government is constructing nine other centres to house illegal foreigners.

Detention centres will be constructed at Barpeta, Dima Hasao, Kamrup, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar and Sonitpur and a total of Rs 100 crores will be spent in the construction.

The construction of the Matia detention centre began in December 2018 and it will be surrounded by 20-22 feet high walls to guard the boundary.

Apart from staff quarters, it will also have a hospital, school, kitchen, dining halls and space for community gatherings.

The detention centre will also have six toilet blocks, each having 15 toilets and bathrooms.
