JORHAT: Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, on Tuesday (April 16), led a massive roadshow at Jorhat constituency in Assam in support of party candidate Gaurav Gogoi.

Leading the spirited roadshow in Jorhat district of Assam, Priyanka Gandhi pledged to increase daily wages of tea garden workers if INDIA bloc, the opposition alliance led by the Congress, secures victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing a massive gathering during the roadshow, Priyanka Gandhi emphasized the significance of this promise, highlighting the “unmet expectations” of the tea garden workers under the current BJP government.

“When I visited tea gardens in Assam before the assembly polls two to three years ago, I made a commitment to raise wages if Congress came to power. Unfortunately, the wages remained stagnant at around Rs 250 as you chose the BJP,” she lamented.

“But I assure you once again that our manifesto guarantees an increase in wages for tea garden workers if we form the government at the Centre,” she added.

Expressing concern over the alleged intentions of the BJP to amend the Constitution, Priyanka Gandhi warned of dire consequences for the common people if such changes were to occur.

“The ruling party’s proposed changes to the Constitution will adversely affect the rights of ordinary citizens,” the Congress leader cautioned.

Throwing her weight behind Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi, Priyanka Gandhi commended his commitment to addressing the genuine concerns of the people.

“While BJP leaders focus on irrelevant issues during their campaigns, Gaurav Gogoi has consistently prioritized the welfare of the people,” Priyanka Gandhi remarked.

In a direct attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Priyanka Gandhi criticized his handling of the unemployment crisis, alleging that he failed to adequately address the issue in a recent interview.

“Unemployment is at an all-time high, yet the Prime Minister mentioned it only twice in his recent interview, which mainly revolved around his ‘Man Ki Baat’,” she asserted.

Urging voters to cast their ballots based on issues such as price rise rather than religious or caste considerations, Priyanka Gandhi called for a united effort to hold the government accountable.

Priyanka Gandhi, accompanied by several senior Assam Congress leaders, including Gaurav Gogoi and state Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah, embarked on the roadshow from Titabor Chariali, the assembly seat of former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi.

The roadshow, covering approximately two kilometres, culminated at Titabor Tiniali within the town.

Highlighting the unique cultural and historical heritage of Northeast states, Priyanka Gandhi criticized the BJP government for imposing its own rules on this rich legacy.

“The BJP government’s actions have disregarded the distinct cultural identity of the Northeast,” she remarked.

In the upcoming polls, Gaurav Gogoi will face a direct contest with sitting MP Topon Kumar Gogoi of the BJP.

Voting in Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency in Assam is scheduled to take place in the first phase on April 19.

After the successful roadshow in Jorhat district of Assam, Priyanka Gandhi proceeded to Tripura to lead another roadshow in the Tripura West constituency.
