Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Debabrata Saikia has lost the post of the Leader of the Opposition of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

An official notification issued in this regard said that the Assembly withdrawn the status of leader of the opposition of MLA Debabrata Saikia as the present strength of the Congress is not equal to the quorum fixed to constitute a sitting of the House.

“The present strength of the Indian National Congress Legislature Party, Assam Legislative Assembly, is not equal to the quorum fixed to constitute a sitting of the House, that is one-sixth of the total number of Members of the House as required

“… therefore, the Hon’ble Speaker, Assam Legislative Assembly, has been pleased to withdraw the recognition of Debabrata Saikia, MLA, as Leader of the Opposition, with effect from January 1, 2021,” said an official notification.

The Assembly decision comes after the Congress party’s strength in the Assembly was reduced to only 20 MLAs, one less than the required number.

“The Congress party’s strength has come down below the requisite number. Following this, after considering all aspects, the Speaker has withdrawn the recognition,” said an official of the Assembly.
