Congress MP in the Lok Sabha Pradyut Bordoloi on Friday opposed Centre’s reported move to privatise the Numaligarh Refinary Limited (NRL) in the parliamentary standing committee meeting.
Raising the issue in the standing committee meeting that was headed by Ramesh Bidhuri, Bordoloi said privatization of NRL will not be acceptable to the people of Assam.

“In fact, the proposed move will push the state onto a brink of turmoil,” said Bordoloi.
He said that NRL was established following the historic Assam Accord of 1985.
“The petroleum refinery was setup as a central public sector enterprise with the equity participation of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Oil India Limited and Assam government which has 61.65 per cent, 26 per cent and 12.35 per cent stake respectively,” said Bordoloi.

Significantly, centre has recently moved for disinvestment of BPCL.
“Being a subsidiary of BPCL, privatisation of BPCL will also lead to privatization of NRL,” said the Congress MP.
