The clamour for the release of peasants’ leader Akhil Gogoi has reached Paris, France.
The supporters of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) chief Akhil Gogoi have recently put up huge banners in front Eiffel Tower in Paris demanding his immediate release.
The image of the banner that reads ‘Free Akhil Gogoi’ is doing the rounds in social media.
KMSS chief Akhil, who was in the forefront of the anti-Citizenship (Amenmmdent) Act (CAA) agitation, has been lodged in Guwahati Central Jail since December 27 last year.
Akhil was arrested by Assam police in Jorhat on December 12, a day after the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) was passed in Parliament on December 11, 2019, as a “preventive measure” amid anti-CAA protests.
On December 13, Guwahati police registered a suo moto case against him.
The case was handed over to NIA on December 14, which booked him under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Earlier, the students of Jamia Millia Islamia University joined the chorus for the release of Gogoi who is being termed as a ‘political prisoner’.
The students of Jamia expressed their displeasure over his arrest by painting graffiti on the walls of the University, turning them into ‘walls of discontent’.
