Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi on Friday sent a letter to the Central Government recommending Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde, the senior most judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor.
The present CJI sent a letter to the Ministry of Law and Justice recommending it starts the process for appointing Justice SA Bobde as the next CJI.

As per reports, Gogoi had has gone by the convention to recommend the name of the next senior judge after him as his successor.
According to the Memorandum of Procedure, which governs the appointment of the CJI and the judges of the Supreme Court of India, “appointment to the office of the Chief Justice of India should be of the senior most Judge of the Supreme Court considered fit to hold the office.”
Gogoi, who is the 46th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, has a tenure of 13 months and 15 days while Justice Bobde, who will be sworn in as CJI on November 18, will have a tenure of about 18 months.

Gogoi was sworn as the 46th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India on October 3 last year.
Justice Bobde, who had been serving as a judge of the Supreme Court for eight years, is also the chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University of Mumbai and Nagpur.
He had also served as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
