Section 144 CrPC has been imposed in East Police District area in Guwahati city to prevent agitation, procession, slogan shouting etc. with immediate effect mainly to prevent protests against Citizenship Bill.

The prohibitory order has been issued by Deputy Commissioner of East Police District, Dr Ramandeep Kaur.

The order will be  in force in all the areas under police stations of Dispur, Bhangagarh, Basistha, Hatigaon, Sonapur and Khetri within the jurisdiction of East Police District in Guwahati.

The prohibition has been imposed in the wake of various organizations resorting to agitation course in the state against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 which was passed in Lok Sabha on January 8 last and awaiting nod of the Rajya Sabha to become an Act.

The Bill proposes to grant Indian Citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim minority communities including Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains, Buddhists and Christians from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who had fled to India till December 31, 2014.

Apprehension that the Bill if passed in the Parliament will open the floodgate for Hindus from Bangladesh to the state, a large number of organizations in Assam have hit the streets and vowed to oppose it tooth and nail thereby creating a restive atmosphere in the state.

Most of these agitating organisations tend to stage demonstrations and take of protest rally in Guwahati city to derive maximum mileage under the constant media glare. This has affected the vehicular traffic in the busy city most of the time besides giving harrowing time to the police personnel.
