Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said children born out of live-in relationships would receive full legal recognition and equal rights over parental property under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) passed by the Assam Assembly.
Addressing the media after the passage of the Uniform Civil Code Bill, the Chief Minister said the legislation contains provisions aimed at ensuring equal legal protection and inheritance rights for children irrespective of the nature of their parentsโ relationship.
Sarma said the proposed law seeks to regulate live-in relationships through mandatory registration while safeguarding the rights of children born from such unions.
According to him, children born to couples in live-in relationships would be granted full legal status and enjoy the same rights over parental property as any other son or daughter.
The Chief Minister said the legislation also focuses on womenโs rights, regulation of marriage-related matters and equal inheritance provisions.
He added that both sons and daughters would have equal rights over parental property under the proposed framework.
The Assam Assembly on Wednesday adopted the Uniform Civil Code Bill, making Assam the third state after Uttarakhand and Gujarat to pass such legislation.
The Bill will now be sent to the President of India for assent before it comes into force.
The proposed law excludes Scheduled Tribe communities from its ambit while seeking to establish a common civil framework governing personal matters in the state.
